Dash Snow….

Dash Snow makes me smile. He was such a badass but in the same breathe I think, you big baby! You had a ton of money, came from this great family tradition, blew it all on drugs, and killed yourself. I always think it is such a wimpy thing to do…..the inability to balance yourself enough to endure….he had a beautiful daughter named “Secret Midnight Magic Nico” with some chick who was not Agathe Snow. I am team Agathe Snow…here is a link to her Stylelikeu video…http://stylelikeu.com/closets/agathe-snow/ Dash like a million other artist I admire, had a life that ended tragically at least his ended tragically in a $325 a night motel room and not in a gutter but still…..it’s tragic. It is my opinion that his life demonstrated the wasting of a gift. He had some great, funny, photography and I was always secretly cheering on his daring graffiti feats!!
Dash had a ton of critics but who doesn’t? I know there are a lot of people who say that his art was not impressive; that he only got into shows because of his pedigree. I for one, don’t care how you get there, it still takes major balls to live with wild abandon……I will give him that. One more thing….He knew beards were cool before we did…..This video has a good collective view of his photography….

All the best artist are dead….

It saddens me to think that most of the artist I find inspiring and profound, took their own lives.  I don’t get it.  It seems that when you exude that level of talent, enjoy hanging out at the best parties, and possess that amount of talent, you should be happy?  Depression is an awful oppressor.  I love, love, love, Diane Arbus.  I love her because she saw the beauty in freaks….in true originals….and in doing so, exposed their not so always evident beauty.  I admire people who have the courage to be different……they deserve to be photographed.

Old School Vampires….

Twillight was a good book series.  I can admit it.  I was hooked, I read them back to back.  Although, when I started to think about the old school vampire books and movies I’ve experienced; it made this stuff look soft.  It is my hope, that this generation doesn’t pass on these terrifying classics!!  I mean, come on, Bram Stokers-Dracula is the one of the scariest vampire stories ever!!  The images of Lucy struggling to resist Dracula, Dracula scaling the wall of his mansion at night, climbing like a creepy spider, and his waiting in his coffin, listening, as he is shipping himself across the ocean, those unnerving images are still burned in my mind.  The best part is that it’s up to your own imagination to produce these images!  Anybody that has been watching the Twillight movies, I’m sure would agree, that nothing beats the images your own mind is capable of producing.  Movies often come close; but no cigar.  I mentioned the movie, The Hunger in my last post and that movie is extremely creepy!  First of all, David Bowie is in it, that in itself should make it a cult classic.  It starts off with a couple hunting their prey, a girl to murder, and the female vampire is the lead in this movie.  This vampire stabs her victims jugular with her amulet, rendering them her love slaves until they start to decay, rapidly age, and find themselves stored in caskets in the attic.  Along comes Susan Surandons character and then the tables turn……Here is a link to the synopsis….http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085701/synopsis this stuff is freakier than twillight….it should be prerequisite viewing….Oh! Don’t forget interview with a vampire….also a classic worth viewing…..
